Garden gates are mainly small structures that differ in materials of manufacture, construction and height. They can be forged and openwork, or they can be solid from profiled metal sheet.

Gates made of wood is often used to organize an entrance area on a private or suburban territory. The design can be quite simple, performing only utilitarian functions, or intricate and skillful, causing universal admiration. Despite the emergence of new building materials and technologies, gates from wood are still relevant. It has undeniable advantages:

  • simplicity of processing — wood is easy to saw, drill, fasten with nails or self-tapping screws;
  • natural beauty — a good tree is enough to cover with transparent protective means, and it will already be beautiful;
  • cost—effectiveness – if you use the available and ubiquitous tree species, the gates will cost quite cheap;
  • light weight, which does not require powerful supports to hold.

The gate is not able to perform its functions without a support, the role of which is most often played by a pillar. To install the support pillars, you need to prepare two small pits. If the soil is rocky or sandy, then the depressions are made up to 50 cm, and on loose soil — up to 1 m. Before lowering the beam into the pit, it needs to be sharpened and treated with an antiseptic. Then you need to put the support in the recess, fill it with soil and tamp it with a shovel handle. During concrete pouring, the verticality of the beam is controlled by using a plumb line. While the solution is being fixed, you can make a wooden gate.

Work on the manufacture of the door begins with the assembly of the gate frame. Its height depends on the architectural design of the owner. The frame can be flush with the fence or slightly higher (lower). Many UK craftsmen build wooden gates with their own hands on canopies. However, they look more attractive on hinges, the length of which should be no more than 1/3 of the width of the opening. First, the hinges are screwed to the door, and then to the support. After that, one can start painting: the surfaces are treated with an antiseptic and covered with a composition. It is allowed to paint only dry wood. If the gate got wet in the rain, then you will have to wait until it dries, and only then start painting. After finishing the paintwork, begin to install the latch. It is screwed with screws from the inside of the door at a level convenient for the owner.
